CASTED OBJECTS - ALU CASTS

Bram Vanderbeke

In his new series of aluminium cast objects, Bram Vanderbeke embodies both the insights he has gathered over the years and what he has been planning for some time now. Relying on the unique idiom of Casted Objects and the singular textures of New Primitives, he formulates an idiosyncratic collection of compact, casted aluminium sculptures which, literally and figuratively, shed a new light on what preceded them. For, whereas the waxed concrete used to absorb most of the ambient light, the processed aluminium now delicately reflects it; ultimately bringing the works into a new relationship with what surrounds them. As before, Bram Vanderbeke first prepares the moulds, mimicking a bricklayer's foundations for houses and buildings. Moulds which he then, steered by the moment and armed with a grinding wheel, treats and enriches; provides with the traces that will later define the casts’ textures. A process of sometimes subtle, sometimes more substantial manipulation, which is even continued when the shapes have already been cast. Up until the point where objects appear, functioning both as stools and side tables, that imply a history. A history of which they may perhaps be a prediction rather than a consequence..
