A CITY’S LIGHT
Brut Collection
Continuing an annual routine and in line with their philosophy, BRUT Collective presents a new, shared scenography. This year, however, they chose to provide the various scenographic elements with their own distinct functionality. A decision deliberately shifting the creation of a shared atmosphere towards the formulation of a full-grown collective collection. Drawing from quintessential city elements, the often modular and customisable pieces add up to a synthesis of an urban landscape and challenge the relationships between the public and the domestic.
To introduce this lamp, a brief excursion may be required, a small trip into one's own memories. Bringing us back to fleeting times where the streetlights sang softly, and the light gradually evolved into that characteristic yellow glow in which the streets bathed. For although we are dealing here with an idiosyncratic appropriation of a timeless urban element, an actualisation of what has been available for a century, the ambience it radiates is somewhat nostalgic. But apart from that, a lamp for a city is of insurmountable importance, as it accompanies the activities that continue during the day as well as at night and installs a sense of security, perhaps even belonging. A logic that applies just as much indoors.
In the design of A City’s Light we again encounter a similar basic shape, a consistent motif manifest in this entire first BRUT collection, modified only according to the area of application. The materiality is determined by the folded aluminium of the lampshade in relation to the galvanized steel of the support. When combined with one of the modular blocks, the lamp can stand on its own, or otherwise it can be easily mounted on the wall.
